When writers talk about New York...
This a small, but hopefully interesting list.
I'm sure I'm still missing some great quotes,
feel free enlighten me.
the true new yorker secretly believes
that people living anywhere else
have to be, in some sense, kidding.
- john updike
One belongs to New York instantly,
one belongs to it as much in
five minutes as in five years.
-Thomas Wolfe
It couldn't have happened anywhere
but little old New York.
-O. Henry
In Boston, they ask how does he know.
In New York how much is he worth?
-Mark Twain
It is often said that New York is a city for
only the very rich and the very poor.
It is less often said that New York is also,
at least for those of us who came there
from somewhere else, a city for
only the very young.
- Joan Didion
No one as yet had approached the management
of New York in a proper spirit; that is to say,
regarding it as the shiftless outcome of squalid
barbarism and reckless extravagance. No one is
likely to do so, because reflections on the long
narrow pig-trough are construed as malevolent attacks
against the spirit and majesty of the American people,
and lead to angry comparisons.
-Rudyard Kipling
New York's the nation's thyroid gland.
-Christopher Morley.
Manhattan is a narrow island off
the coast of New Jersey devoted to
the pursuit of lunch.
-Raymond Sokolov
That's the New York thing, isn't it.
People who seem absolutely crazy going
around telling you how crazy they used to
be before they had therapy.
-Judith Rossner
My one thought is to get out of New York,
to experience something genuinely
American.
- Henry Miller
In New York it's not whether you win or lose
--it's how you lay the blame.
-Fran Lebowitz
When you leave New York, you are
astonished at how clean the rest of the
world is. Clean is not enough.
-Fran Lebowitz
Skyscraper national park.
-Kurt Vonnegut

The importance of work
“(Capital-W) Work is what we have considered for years: your boss tells you to do something, you do it, and you get paid. By contrast, (little-w) work is motivated by inherent interest and generally unpaid.
Think of the difference between an Encyclopedia Britannica editor doing Work, and a Wikipedia editor doing work during spare hours. Big Work drives the economy; little work drives the Internet. Big Work builds skyscrapers; little work generates a half million fanfiction stories about Harry Potter.”
- Clay Shirky
